The filmmakers behind Freaky, Happy Death Day and Werewolves Within are joining forces for the genre-bending slasher rom-com Heart Eyes, Deadline reports this afternoon.
Josh Ruben (Werewolves Within, Scare Me) will be directing the Valentine’s Day-themed horror movie, with Mason Gooding (Scream) and Olivia Holt (“Cruel Summer”) starring.
The upcoming slasher movie from Spyglass (Scream, Scream VI, Thanksgiving) features a screenplay written by Phillip Murphy (The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard), Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day, Freaky), and Michael Kennedy (Freaky).
In Heart Eyes, “when the Heart Eyes Killer strikes Seattle, a pair of co-workers pulling overtime on Valentine’s Day are mistaken for a couple by the elusive couple-hunting killer. Now they must spend the most romantic night of the year running for their lives.”
Josh Ruben said in a statement shared by Deadline today, “My love of horror is rivaled only by my love of romantic comedies. I’m excited as hell to mount my most challenging genre bender to date: a brutal slasher in a nostalgic rom-com universe.”
Christopher Landon and Divide/Conquer’s Greg Gilreath and Adam Hendricks (M3gan, Totally Killer) are producing. Spyglass’ Gary Barber and Chris Stone will serve as EPs with Murphy.
No word yet on whether or not Mason Gooding will be returning for Spyglass’ upcoming Scream VII, but we’ll be sure to report more on that project as we learn it. Stay tuned.
