It’s not looking all that likely at this point that we’ll ever be seeing Guillermo del Toro‘s Hellboy 3, the final installment in the once-planned trilogy starring Ron Perlman as Big Red.
Then again, sequels to previous iterations of a property coming along after a reboot has been released aren’t entirely uncommon, as Ash came back in “Ash vs. Evil Dead” in the wake of the Fede Alvarez remake and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween franchises went back to the original continuities after their own remakes seemed to move us away from the past.
So could we someday see Perlman return in Hellboy 3? In his most recent comments on the matter, Perlman explains that the fans deserve it, even if he’s not exactly eager to do it.
Perlman tells The Independent, “Am I eager to do Hellboy 3? No, I’m 71 fucking years old. We owe this to the fans, and we should give it to them because it would be an epic conclusion.”
“So Guillermo, if you’re reading, I’m not done pounding you to get this fucking thing done,” Perlman adds, making a plea to Guillermo del Toro in an effort to make it happen.
The Hellboy franchise returned to theaters back in 2019 with a reboot starring David Harbour (“Stranger Things”) as the title character, but that film failed to light up the box office. It pulled in just $55 million worldwide on a $50 million production budget, ensuring that Harbour’s portrayal of Hellboy would be a one-and-done experience. But that doesn’t mean we’ll never see a return to Guillermo del Toro’s vision of Hellboy, which fared much better at the box office – even if 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army wasn’t a big enough hit to justify another sequel.
In the wake of 2019’s Hellboy, it would seem that fan interest in a del Toro-directed Hellboy 3 is at an all-time high, so never say never. Anything is possible in the world of Hollywood.
