Hulu’s Hellraiser, a reimagining of Clive Barker’s 1987 horror classic from director David Bruckner, will debut in the U.S. exclusively on Hulu on October 7, and Bloody Disgusting has learned that Lakeshore Records will release the Hellraiser (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) on October 7 as well. And today we’re debuting an exclusive track from the score!
Ben Lovett composed the score for Hulu’s brand new Hellraiser movie, and the track you can listen to down below takes you deep inside the Puzzle Box. It’s titled, fittingly, “Blood Box.”
Lovett tells Bloody Disgusting, “How does one approach music for a Hellraiser film without the outsized influence of Christopher Young’s original score? It’s one of the most famous pieces of music in the genre and for David and myself, part of the fabric of what makes a Hellraiser movie. We were very fortunate that Mr. Young gave us his blessing to reinterpret those themes into our score for the new film. In [“Blood Box”] you hear variations on the opening notes to his composition “Resurrection” from the original movie, which felt like a fitting point of inspiration to explore a reimagining of those ideas.”
He adds, “There were so many places to draw inspiration from: the original movie, the sequels, the unreleased Coil themes. I had the Motörhead cover of Ozzy Osborne’s song “Hellraiser” on repeat for a while, which might have been the inspiration for my desire to open the film with a chaotic blast of electric guitar compressing into one big heavy metal power chord. For all the romantic, classical influences on the score I also wanted to represent the brute force of all the danger inside that puzzle box in the most simple, contained way possible.”
