We told you last night that Blumhouse and Universal’s Five Nights at Freddy’s is a massive hit, debuting with $78 million domestically and $130 million worldwide over the weekend.
Made on a production budget of just $20 million, Five Nights at Freddy’s is proving to be a big time moneymaker for the studios, and a sequel is all but guaranteed at this point.
But before we look ahead to what’s next – stay tuned for updates! – let’s take a look at the box office records that the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie has already shattered.
Five Nights at Freddy’s has already become…
1) The biggest Blumhouse global opening of all time, ahead of Halloween ($91.8M).
2) Biggest opening for a horror film directed by a woman (Emma Tammi). This is Blumhouse’s third project with director Emma Tammi, who previously helmed Into the Dark: Delivered and Election Day: Lens Across America (doc film co-directed with Henry Jacobson).
3) The highest grossing opening weekend for a Blumhouse film, surpassing Halloween ($76.2M).
4) The highest opening for any PG-13 horror film, surpassing The Mummy Returns ($68.139M).
5) The biggest original Horror opening of 2023 and the second biggest Horror opening, just behind The Nun II.
6) The highest domestic opening for Halloween Weekend, surpassing Puss in Boots.
7) Biggest domestic horror movie opening weekend of the year, passing Scream VI.
Five Nights at Freddy’s is also…
1) The third largest domestic opening for any horror movie, behind IT and IT Chapter Two.
2) The 19th Blumhouse film to open in first place at the domestic box office.
One other thing worth noting at this time is that Five Nights at Freddy’s brings Blumhouse’s total domestic box office to more than $3 billion, further establishing the brand as a true powerhouse in the horror field. To say the least, they’ve got reason to celebrate this Halloween.
And don’t forget: Five Nights at Freddy’s is not only playing in theaters nationwide, it’s also streaming on Peacock as well. Watch it in your local theater or at home – the choice is yours.
In the film, “a troubled security guard begins working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. While spending his first night on the job, he realizes the night shift at Freddy’s won’t be so easy to make it through.”
Five Nights at Freddy’s is directed by Emma Tammi (The Wind, Blood Moon) and is written by Scott Cawthon, Emma Tammi and Seth Cuddeback.
Jim Henson’s Creature Shop handled the film’s monster animatronics.
Five Nights at Freddy’s is a horror video game series in which you must survive the titular five nights at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza from the dangers of animatronic characters.
