In the most recent trailer for Hocus Pocus 2, we get a taste of some backstory footage that’s set over 300 years prior to the events of the original movie, revealing that we’re going to be meeting the Sanderson Sisters as kids in the upcoming sequel. Ahead of Hocus Pocus 2 arriving on Disney+ on September 30, producer David Kirschner teases that trip into the past.
The Broadway Podcast network’s hit show The Art of Kindness with Robert Peterpaul, hosted by actor & journalist Robert Peterpaul, just debuted the first part of their interview with Kirschner, the creator of Hocus Pocus and the producer of the new sequel. The Art of Kindness spotlights kindness in the arts through intimate conversations with industry powerhouses who use their platforms to make the world a better place. Kirschner joined Peterpaul to discuss the kindness of making the cult classic, along with what to expect from the upcoming sequel.
“In the sequel what you will see at the beginning is the Sanderson girls as teenagers and Winifred is just as awful before she realizes that she’s a witch,” Kirschner tells the show.
He continues, “It’s her 16th birthday and she meets a character in the Forbidden Forest, where the Sanderson cottage is, who is played by Hannah Waddingham from Ted Lasso. She plays an elderwitch and she is the one that gives book to Winifred Sanderson so you get an idea of their background and how those powers came to be. The elderwitch recognizes in Winifred there’s something very powerful.
“I think that will be a wonderful foundation for people to understand how the Sandersons came to be and how they got their powers and why they chose to live in the Forbidden Forest and, of course, their love for snacking on children.”

The film is being billed as “the spooky sequel to the 1993 Halloween classic,” with Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy all back as the beloved Sanderson Sisters.
Doug Jones will also be returning as Billy Butcherson, seen in the latest trailer!
“It’s been 29 years since someone lit the Black Flame Candle and resurrected the 17th-century sisters who were executed for practicing witchcraft, and they are looking for revenge. Now it is up to three high-school students to figure out how to stop the ravenous witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on Salem before midnight on All Hallow’s Eve.”
Anne Fletcher (The Guilt Trip) directed Hocus Pocus 2 for Disney+.
The cast includes Whitney Peak (“Gossip Girl,” “Molly’s Game”) as Becca, Lilia Buckingham (“Dirt,” “Crown Lake”) as Cassie, and Belissa Escobedo (“American Horror Stories,” “The Baker and the Beauty”) as Izzy, three young women in present-day Salem who incite the wrath of the three witches. Sam Richardson (Werewolves Within) will also star. “Arrested Development” favorite Tony Hale and “Ted Lasso” actress Hannah Waddingham have also both landed roles with Froy Gutierrez, Juju Brener, Taylor Paige Henderson, and Nina Kitchen.
The Kenny Ortega-directed 1993 movie starred Omri Katz as a curious youngster who moves to Salem, Massachusetts, where he struggles to fit in before awakening a trio of diabolical witches (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy) that were executed in the 17th century. The film also starred Thora Birch, who will not return for the sequel, unfortunately.
Jen D’Angelo (“Workaholics”) wrote the sequel’s script.
