Let’s face it: there’s not enough body horror in video games. And while it doesn’t appear that we’ll be getting another video game adaptation of John Carpenter’s The Thing anytime soon, we can look to indie developer Bad Coffee Games and their new game RATUZ for our body horror.
Available today via Steam, RATUZ takes the body horror of The Thing, mashes it up with Prince of Persia and INSIDE to create a gloriously gory stealth action horror game. The story centres on a prison complex, where an experiment involving the inmates gets out of control, resulting in a giant rat-human mutant that has a habit of chasing you and ripping people apart. You need to survive and escape the complex, which has its fair share of weird secrets.
As mentioned, the game takes a few notes from classic platformer Prince of Persia, but focuses more on puzzle solving, as well as trying to remain hidden and avoid getting your head ripped off. The mutant rat man isn’t your only concern, however. The prison still has its guards patrolling, who are all too happy to kill you on sight. There are also plenty of traps and other environmental hazards that you must avoid.
Honestly, RATUZ appears to be the type of game where you almost want to die every chance you get, just to see the horrific animations play out (INSIDE, anyone?). That’s obviously not the main goal of the game, since there are multiple endings for you uncover. Not to mention the various other mutations the facility’s scientists have been creating that will have you wishing you had a flamethrower. Sadly you don’t, so you’ve got to play it smart to avoid death.
