In the wake of the box office underperformance of 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate, you may be wondering what the future of the franchise is looking like at this point in time. Last we heard back in early 2021, Netflix and Skydance were working on an animated series set in the world of the Terminator franchise, but what about the franchise’s future on the big screen?
Speaking with Wondery and Amazon’s “SmartLess” Podcast this week, franchise creator James Cameron commented briefly on where he’d like to see the franchise go next.
“If I were to do another Terminator film and maybe try to launch that franchise again, which is in discussion, but nothing has been decided, I would make it much more about the AI side of it than bad robots gone crazy,” Cameron explains to the podcast.
The original plan was for Terminator: Dark Fate to kick off a brand new three-movie arc for the franchise, but it sounds like those plans are likely dead in the water at this point.
As for Cameron, if all goes according to plan he’s going to be spending the next several years making Avatar movies. Where does Terminator fit in all of that? Only time will tell.
Launched in 1984 with James Cameron’s original action-slasher, the Terminator franchise to date includes six feature films and a short-lived spinoff television series.
