It was announced back in 2020 that Universal was prepping a new take on The Wolfman, with Ryan Gosling attached to star as the title character/classic Universal Studios monster. Last we heard, Leigh Whannell (The Invisible Man) was in negotiations to direct the film for Blumhouse, though it’s been well over a year since we’ve heard a peep about the project.
What’s the latest on this one? Is it still happening? Chatting with Collider this week, Jason Blum reveals that the project is still in development, with the script currently in the works.
Blum updates, “We are working on the script, got to get the script right. Working on trying to get a script that [Gosling] feels good about and comfortable about and excited about.”
Beyond Whannell’s Wolfman, a new take on the 1941 classic, it sounds like Blumhouse is also working with Universal Studios on other fresh takes on the classic Universal Monsters.
Blum teases, “We have two or three we’re developing. They’re not yet announced, so I can’t talk about them. But the status with Universal monsters is no different than it’s ever been. Universal is in charge of the Universal monsters. But we’ve come up with a few ideas that they’ve like for a few of their other ones. And hopefully, we’ll turn those into movies.”
