During Universal’s CinemaCon presentation last week, Jordan Peele teased that new marketing materials for Nope – including the footage shown off to CinemaCon attendees – are coming soon, while asking those in attendance to please keep secret whatever it is they were shown. As always with Peele, Nope has been shrouded in secrecy, and that’s how we like it.
“Some [theories] get kind of close,” Peele noted at CinemaCon, while calling others complete “nonsense.” All we know, for now, is that the movie has *something* to do with aliens.
In the film, “Residents in a lonely gulch of inland California bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery.”
While we wait for the next round of marketing, the most recent thing we got from Universal was a 30-second TV spot featuring Golden State Warriors basketball player Steph Curry, which first aired during NBA playoff games last month. The spot put Curry into some of the locations from Peele’s Nope, and we’re thinking there’s a wealth of meaning to the whole thing.
In the spot, Curry is shooting hoops on the ranch where Nope seems to be primarily set, The Haywood Ranch; “the only Black-owned horse trainers in Hollywood.” From there, just like in the official trailer for Nope, the power cuts out and strange things start to happen, leading Curry outside. He’s having none of it, walking away from the scene with a dismissive “nope.”
This latest spot seems to feature several little Easter Eggs for eagle-eyed fans, including the t-shirt that’s worn by Curry in the footage. Looking like the poster for Disney’s Holes, Curry’s shirt has a “Kid Sheriff” graphic on it, which could be a clue in regards to something we don’t yet know about the movie. The other Easter Eggs spotted in the spot are direct references to props and moments from Peele’s third movie – including a record player and colorful pendants – so we’re thinking everything on display in this spot indeed has to do with the movie.
But who or what is “Kid Sheriff”? Stay tuned, we may know more real soon…
Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out) will be reteaming with Peele on the mysterious movie, with the cast also including Steven Yeun (“The Walking Dead,” Mayhem) and Keke Palmer (“Scream”). Michael Wincott (The Crow), Barbie Ferreira and Brandon Perea also star.
Nope is part of a “five-year exclusive production partnership” Universal Pictures inked with Peele and his Monkeypaw Productions, and it’s been described as a “horror event.” Mind you, anything from Peele at this point is instantly an event, but we can probably expect Nope to be Peele’s biggest movie to date, with an announced IMAX optimization. On that note, the film’s cinematographer is Hoyte van Hoytema, whose previous work includes Let the Right One In, Spectre, and the Christopher Nolan films Interstellar, Dunkirk, and Tenet.
Nope arrives in theaters worldwide on July 22, 2022.
