Kevin Smith returns to horror with the upcoming anthology film KillRoy Was Here, which originally began as a Krampus film before being re-written. The horror-comedy creature anthology was inspired by the “KilRoy Was Here” graffiti that was prominent during World War II, and at one point we had been expecting it back in 2021. Alas, the release never happened.
More recently, we had learned just about one year ago that KillRoy Was Here was going to be released in a highly untraditional way, being offered up exclusively in the NFT space. And that’s still the plan (sigh), as Deadline has reported more on the release strategy today.
Deadline reports, “Smith and his producers Jordan Monsanto of SmodCo and David Shapiro of Semkhor have partnered with Secret Network’s Legendao to launch NFTs of their horror anthology, KillRoy Was Here. Smith’s film will be the first in history released in this format, expanding the possibilities of what NFTs can provide in a quickly evolving entertainment business.”
“The movie itself—along with exclusive content from the film, behind-the-scenes footage, and a commentary track—will be launched as a 5,555-piece generative art NFT collection on Secret Network’s primary NFT minting platform, Legendao, which will collaborate with Semkhor and Curio, the premier NFT platform for entertainment brands, to produce the KillRoy Was Here collection,” Deadline further explains the confusing/frustrating release plan.
In other words, you won’t be able to watch KillRoy Was Here unless you have the “crypto key” that unlocks the film. If this is the future of film consumption, you can count me out.
Smith also notes in the report that he’s working on a “brand new chapter” of the anthology saga, with the NFT purchase giving you the rights to make your own KillRoy stories.
