‘King Spawn’ – Hunt Begins for a Director for Blumhouse’s “Dark and Gritty” Movie

It was announced earlier this week that a script has finally been completed for Blumhouse’s planned movie adaptation of the Spawn comic books, which is currently titled King Spawn.

Based on characters created by Todd McFarlane, the Blumhouse script was written by Matt MixonMalcolm Spellman (Falcon and the Winter Soldier) & Scott Silver (Joker).

But who’s directing the movie, you might be wondering? The Hollywood Reporter notes in a fresh report this week that Blumhouse’s search for a director is now getting underway.

THR reports, “King Spawn now has a completed script, one that McFarlane and producer Jason Blum’s Blumhouse have enough confidence in to start meeting with directors for the movie.”

“After finding a director, the team will then approach studio partners,” the site adds.

Deadpool is a fun R. Something like Joker 2 is a serious R. Our movie is going to be super serious and dark and gritty,” McFarlane teases. “It’s going to be an at times a heavy movie. If you like serious drama, with meaningful themes that are relevant and that may even some reflection of the world we live in, then this has a lot of those elements in it.”

The upcoming King Spawn movie is said to be a “mid-budget” production.

It would seem Blumhouse’s upcoming movie has evolved over the years into an adaptation of the King Spawn comic book storyline, which was launched by Image Comics back in 2021.

In King Spawn, “When one of the vilest creatures ever imprisoned in Hell is released back onto Earth, Spawn follows the clues right into a trap set just for him. But why does Kincaid want Spawn to ascend the throne of Hell, and what of the prophecy of the King Spawn?”‘

It’s been a long hard road out of development hell with his brand new Spawn feature, which Todd McFarlane had originally planned to direct. Jamie Foxx had been attached to play the title character at one point, but we have no idea if that’s still the plan. Stay tuned.
