Limited Run Games has teamed up with Square Enix to bring the original Fear Effect to a modern audience next year. The announcement was made during Limited Run Games’ LRG3 event, which will see the cult favorite arrive digitally on the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, the Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, as well as a physical release.
Not much additional information was revealed regarding the game, though Limited Run Games stated that Fear Effect “challenged assumptions on game aesthetics and art style when it debuted on PlayStation” in a small blurb coinciding with the announcement. From the trailer, it would appear that Fear Effect has received a widescreen makeover.
Originally released on the PlayStation back in 2000, Fear Effect takes place in the year 2050, where you play as one of three mercenaries who have been hired to find the daughter of a powerful Hong Kong Triad boss. The plan is to actually kidnap the girl and hold her for ransom, but the plan soon falters with the discovery of a supernatural conspiracy.
Fear Effect was the subject of a remake by developer Forever Entertainment called Fear Effect Reinvented. However, the remake was subsequently cancelled last year by Forever Entertainment, with no explanation as to why.
