Morbius, Sony Pictures’ latest “dark” Spider-Man spinoff, took a nasty bite out of the box office, topping both The Lost City and The Batman.
Based on the Marvel Comics antihero, Morbius stars Jared Leto as a scientist who, in trying to find a cure for a rare blood disease, accidentally transforms himself into a living vampire.
Following in the footsteps of Venom and setting the table for Kraven, Morbius took in $39.1M here in the States and $44.9M internationally for an $84M global opening.
The opening is considered “weak” by Marvel standards. It’s reportedly one of the lowest openings for a Marvel film ever and was given a brutal C+ CinemaScore. For comparison, Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage opened with $80M and $90M, respectively. Still, Morbius looks to be doing well enough for the studio to write this one off as a pandemic casualty.
Meagan wrote in her review of Morbius, “At best, it’s a serviceable placeholder until the next installment of this expanding universe.” She adds, “Morbius is primarily a fangless affair.”
Did you see the film? What were your thoughts?
