Believe it or not, Metallica used to be punk rock, refusing to sell out and make a music video. It wasn’t until the death of bassist Cliff Burton that the band swallowed its pride and went mainstream.
The very first music video didn’t arrive until 1989 and came off the band’s fourth studio album, …And Justice for All. The video for “One”, directed by Bill Pope and Michael Salomon, would start Metallica’s upward trajectory to becoming the biggest metal band in the world.
It’s a bummer for Metallica fans because there’s no visual history outside of bootlegs living on YouTube.
The backstory makes today’s news a little more interesting because Metallica has released an OFFICIAL animated lyric video for “Master of Puppets”, which has newfound popularity thanks to its use in the season finale of “Stranger Things 4”. If the title track off their third album wasn’t already their most popular, it is now.
Digressing, even though it’s not a full-fledged music video, it is animated, it’s also official, making it the first music video off the infinitely legendary Master of Puppets. Check it out.
