Atlus continues to drop info on the upcoming Shin Megami Tensei V, including details on characters and game mechanics. The latest drop introduces several ancillary characters, including more demons for the player to discover.
First is Shohei Yakumo, who can be considered a rival to the game’s protagonist, aka you. A mysterious man who refers to himself as an exterminator of demons, his motives and true allegiance remain a mystery. His only partner is Nuwa, a demon based on a goddess that appears in Chinese mythology. She’s worked alongside Yakumo since he was young in order to “fulfill certain goals”.
Also introduced is Abdiel, the archangel in command of Bethel’s main branch. Stern and uncompromising, she uses her power to eradicate anyone who threatens Bethel.
As for the mechanics, negotiation is back in SMTV, where you can talk to enemy demons to recruit them instead of fighting them. Demons all have their own personalities and quirks, and SMTV will introduce new behaviours. In addition, having certain demons in your party has the potential to lead to special conversations with enemy demons you encounter.
Fusions are also back, allowing players to merge demons to create a new one. You can also perform a “reverse fusion”, where you’re able to see the results first and select the necessary demons. There are also special fusions, which involve fusing two-to-four demons to create even stronger ones, while elemental fusions allow you to upgrade or downgrade to another demon within the same family.
Also in SMTV are Glory and Miracles. You can spend Glory to learn Miracles when you visit the World of Shadows. Miracles are powerful abilities that cover a wide range of skills that can assist you in battle, negotiations, demon fusions, skill potentials and stat-building.
