We sadly didn’t get a new Mortal Kombat entry last year on the series’ anniversary, but that all changes this year. Warner Bros. Discovery let the news slip during their earnings call yesterday that Mortal Kombat 12 will be coming in 2023.
Picked up by Twitter user Wario64, the clip from the earnings call had Andrew Slabin, Warner Bros. Discovery’s executive vice president of global investor strategy, announcing the new entry in passing. “And there’s lots more to come, including the highly-anticipated Mortal Kombat 12 and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, games also set for release this year with ambitious launch projections,” Slabin stated.
This is the first real news about Mortal Kombat 12 since Johnny Cage’s voice actor, Andrew Bowen, alluded to the game’s development last year. And really, it’s a no brainer for WB and developer NetherRealm, since Mortal Kombat 11 has sold in excess of 12 million units since it launched back in 2019.
And yeah, it’s a year late for the series’ anniversary, but seeing as the superior Mortal Kombat II will be hitting the big 3-0 this April, it’s still very much worth it for a new game. Heck, maybe we’ll even finally get that Mortal Kombat Trilogy remake?
MK12 won’t be the only big name in fighting games this year, as it’ll have to contend with Capcom’s Street Fighter 6, which arrives on June 2.
