With the big reveal last month of Aspyr and Crystal Dynamics’ Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered, Aspyr has thrown fans more meat with a new boss reveal trailer as well as diving into the remasters’ improvements. Per the PlayStation Blog post by Aspyr’s Associate Brand Manager Matthew Ray, among the improvements are a graphical overhaul of the game’s models and textures, as well as new quality of life improvements.
“Each boss encounter in Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered is designed to challenge the player’s mastery of Raziel’s abilities,” explains Ray. “Our goal with the character models was to improve the textures as much as we could while ensuring that they blend in with the apocalyptic world.”
- For Melchiah, the first of Kain’s lieutenants that Raziel must defeat, he received a full texture overhaul, emphasizing darkened skin and a slimier body feel. The bones and skeletal mapping are now more realistic and gory and his eye color was adjusted to match the original look.
- For the insect-like Zephon, the team felt that the original model was too desaturated, so his face has been completely repainted.
- Rahab, whose battle takes place in a flooded abbey, his head has been remodeled, with his eyes now sporting a reddish glow. In addition, Rahab now sports fangs that look more vampiric, and his skin tone has been altered to appear more grey. As for Dumah, his armor has been given a more dirtier look, with patches of mold and blood all over it.
- Lastly, for Kain, his model in both games has been completely redone to match how he appears in the original FMVs.
As for the QoL improvements, both games now include an in-game map and compass. The latter is able to “nudge” players in the correct direction “without giving away specific details of where to go or what to do next.” The developer has also included a collection tracker for any Health and Energy power-ups to ensure that players are aware of any remaining collectibles in each area. For traditionalists, these can all be toggled off in the game settings.
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered is due out for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC via Steam on December 12.
