After a rough first year, CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 is finally starting to be the game that we were hoping for back in 2020. CD Projekt Red looks to continue that momentum with the announcement today during the Night City Wire livestream of the Phantom Liberty DLC expansion, as well as DLC based on the Cyberpunk Edgerunners Netflix series that begins streaming September 13th.
Available today, the Cyberpunk Edgerunners DLC is a story-focused expansion that lets players take on the role of David Martinez, the protagonist of Edgerunners, in events that run parallel to the main Cyberpunk 2077 game. The new content also acts as Patch 1.6 and per IGN, will be the final major update coming to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Cyberpunk 2077. Alongside Edgerunners-inspired items, the update also adds a clothing transmog system, cross-platform progression, playable Roach Race minigame arcade cabinets, and more.
The bigger story is Phantom Liberty, Cyberpunk 2077‘s first major expansion, which is set to launch in 2023. Keanu Reeves‘ Johnny Silverhand character will be returning, as Reeves himself stated during the livestream. Sadly for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One owners, Phantom Liberty will only be available for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.
Set in a new area of Night City, Phantom Liberty will feature a new plot with a new cast of characters. Details on the expansion are vague at the moment, but the story appears to involve V participating in a deal with the New United States of America. According to the game’s lore, the New United States of America is the country that arose in the wake of the Collapse (think The Great Depression on a much higher scale). Of course, Johnny’s not happy with V’s decision.
