Fulqrum Publishing and Incantation Games have shared new details about their upcoming Lovecraftian horror FPS title Decadent, which was first revealed back in April. Specifically, the teams have unveiled a new trailer, which provides more detailed look into the Decadent and its Madness mechanic.
The horrors you encounter on your quest in Decadent will slowly drain sanity from thing such as exploring the Weirds, encountering eldritch, to high-stress situations. Each of these events will increase the player’s madness, which will begin to make an impact on the game itself
The effects of Madness in Decadent may vary depending on the current situation, but in general, there are several states of mind, each with progressively more severe effects. However, you will always have a choice – to play it safe and try to control your mind, or give in to the insanity of the world. In fact, embracing the Madness can offer useful boons as well as penalties.
Moderate Madness will result in mild visual distortion, where you begin to notice things that affect your perception. Interface elements will float/become blurry, and textures in the game become fuzzy. However, the counter to this will be an increase in your intuition, as enemies that are out of sight will have a slight illumination or outline to them, allowing you to prepare for the fight ahead or avoid ambushes.
Total Madness results in severe visual distortion, where contours of objects and enemies become distorted, and you begin to see enemies that aren’t really there. Controlling your body and the interface itself will be more difficult. Your hands will shake when aiming, the cursor may “wander,” and you can accidentally drop ammo or even your weapon.
Decadent tells the tale of one John Lorn, a royal explorer and World War 1 veteran turned occultist. To make things even more interesting, as a result of a traumatic experience during his occult research, Lorn has become the host for a strange parasite. Lorn has traveled to the to the Arctic to follow the traces of a lost Miskatonic University expedition. At the same time, he’s also on a mission to save his estranged son. In doing so, his courage and sanity are pushed to the limit, and learn how much grief he is ready to cause in order to save someone he holds dear.
Currently, Decadent is slated for release next year on Steam and the Epic Games Store, Playstation 5, and the Xbox Series.
