The Condemned series of games were some of the best horror you could find on the 7th generation of consoles. Admittedly, while the second game didn’t quite live up to the first, it was still a good game that took risks in trying new things. It also makes it that much more frustrating that Monolith never gave us a third installment.
With that, GVMERS are back once again to look at both entries in the series. The new documentary covers how Condemned: Criminal Origins’ claustrophobic setting and creepy atmosphere combined with its combat mechanics to make for some of the scariest late-night gaming. Meanwhile, Condemned 2: Bloodshot‘s change in story and gameplay (not to mention an ill-conceived multiplayer mode) led to fans being divided over the game, and ultimately put any sequels on the backburner for Monolith.
As Luiz mentions in his article above, Monolith co-founder and co-creator of the Condemned concept Jace Hall is still waiting on a “proven indie development team” to take the series’ reigns and resurrect it with a third entry. Hall himself still owns the IP, so it’s not an issue of Warner Bros (who owns Monolith) blocking any attempts at another game. Plus, according to Hall, both Condemned games sold well.
However, as noted by the GVMERS documentary, the series really hangs on the first game, as Condemned 2 never received a PC port, and isn’t playable on newer PlayStation and Xbox consoles. But given that Konami has revived the Silent Hill series, alongside a resurrection of Alone in The Dark by THQ Nordic, there’s still hope that we’ll see Condemned again.
In the meantime, you can experience Condemned: Criminal Origins on PC via Steam.
