Nightmare Soup, the children’s horror anthology novel series written by Jake Tri and illustrated by Andy Sciazko that’s currently being adapted into the Bloody FM podcast of the same name, is releasing the ultimate feast – a deluxe hardcover collection.
“As quintessential ’90s kids, Andy and I loved books like Goosebumps, Bruce Coville’s Book of Nightmares, and especially Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark. And since it had been 25 years (at the time) since a new Scary Stories book had come out, we figured we’d try and do it ourselves,” Tri and Sciazko say on their Kickstarter for the new collection.
The first novel, Nightmare Soup: Tales That Will Turn Your Stomach, released in 2016 with 30 short stories and 30 illustrations, followed by Nightmare Soup II: The Second Helping in 2017, and Nightmare Soup III: Midnight Snack in 2022. In early 2024, they published a rewritten and punched up second edition of the first Nightmare Soup novel.
“Now we are combining those three books into one massive hardcover anthology, oversized at 7×10 inches so that the artwork is on full display. At 450 pages, It contains over 90 original stories (plus a few surprises) all illustrated by the master of macabre, Andy Sciazko. And when our newest book Bloody Bites is added to the mix, there are over 110 stories to devour.”
Bloody Bites is geared towards an older, young adult audience, rather than the children and family audience of the original trilogy.
“These stories are generally longer and more menacing, with more graphic depictions of the horror occurring in the stories…If the original Nightmare Soup books are similar to Are You Afraid of the Dark, then Bloody Bites is like HBO’s Tales from the Crypt.”
In less than 24 hours, the Kickstarter has already far exceeded its original goal, and its first stretch goal. All of the books are already finished, so there won’t be a wait for them to be produced, either.
The Ultimate Feast collection will also include Just Desserts: The Art of Andy Sciazko, an 8.5×11, 200 page hardcover “filled with nothing but the most nightmarish pieces of Andy’s portfolio. This includes art from previously unreleased projects.”
The collection comes in white, but there will be a black Kickstarter-backer exclusive edition as well, signed by the author and illustrator:
