NEON is celebrating Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy 20th anniversary in a massive way. Yesterday brought an official poster teasing the upcoming restoration of the jaw-dropping revenge thriller. Today brings the trailer and a release date.
A Greek tragedy by way of a visceral revenge thriller, Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy will keep you guessing at every turn. And right from the get-go, too. Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) is kidnapped on the night of his daughter’s fourth birthday and wakes up imprisoned, sealed in a hotel room. He learns his wife has been murdered, and he’s been framed for her death. Cut to 15 years later, Oh Dae-su is suddenly freed and sent on a quest to find his captor. That barely, and I emphasize barely, sets up the insanity that follows.
It’s the precise type of shocker you’ll want to experience on the big screen. Luckily, NEON is bringing Oldboy, restored and remastered, to theaters on August 16, 2023.
Yoo Ji-tae and Kang Hye-jung also star in Oldboy, which was remade in 2013.
Oldboy was written by Hwang Jo-yun, Lim Jun-hyung, and Park Chan-wook and produced by Kim Dong-joo. The grim thriller is loosely based on the graphic novel Old Boy by Tsuchiya Garon and Minegishi Nobuaki.
Park Chan-wook’s 2003 original was the second piece in the Korean filmmaker’s “Vengeance Trilogy,” which also includes Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Lady Vengeance. Each spin a different story, connected only by the brutal, heart-shattering theme of revenge. That means you won’t have to worry about catching up before seeing Oldboy on the big screen if you haven’t already.
It feels safe to assume that NEON isn’t done yet when it comes to celebrating this brutal thriller’s 20th anniversary. Stay tuned for more on the 20th-anniversary edition of Oldboy as further updates become available.
Don’t miss this restoration when it arrives on August 16.
