One of the next Universal Monsters movies that was announced a couple years back is Paul Feig‘s Dark Army, which Feig has compared to the work of Bride of Frankenstein and The Old Dark House filmmaker James Whale. The film will reportedly include classic Universal Monsters plus brand new monster characters, but is it even still in development at this time?
It’s been a while since we’ve heard a peep about Dark Army, but Feig provides an update in a new chat with Collider. Long story short, he’s having a tough time getting it off the ground.
“That’s one that’s driving me crazy,” Feig tells the site. “The problem with that is that some people read it and think it’s too expensive. I never saw it that way, but that’s what I hear. I’m still working on it and trying to get it to that sweet spot, but it’s hard. I don’t even want to tell you about a couple of other things that we can’t get sold. It’s like, “Oh, my God, who wouldn’t want this?” But probably every producer in town feels that way too.”
“I have to make a monster movie. I have to make my monster movie,” he adds.
Feig had told Coming Soon back in 2019, “I want to bring that ookie spookie feel back to movies, but with these monsters you root for and understand at the same time.”
