Spoilers ahoy!
Columbia Pictures’ Ghostbusters: Afterlife is possessed with surprises that range from the return of Harold Ramis as Egon Spengler to Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons appearing as the never-before-seen antagonist behind everything, Ivo Shandor.
However, there was one rumored cameo that’s been driving me crazy…
Several websites reported (without a single shred of confirmation) that Olivia Wilde starred in Ghostbusters: Afterlife as the infinitely cool Gozer the Gozerian.
It sure did look like her, but a sit through the credits would reveal that Emma Portner is credited in the role with Shohreh Aghdashloo providing the Sumerian shape-shifting god of destruction’s voice. Olivia Wilde’s name is nowhere to be found.
I wanted actual confirmation and spent a week reaching out to anyone I could connect with, only to be ignored by most. Even with a little fuel in my tank, I was not confident enough to write a story confirming Wilde’s involvement.
Well, patience is a virtue. Arjen Tuiten, the film’s special make-up & live-action creature effects designer, has not only confirmed Olivia Wilde’s performance, but has also shared an awesome behind-the-scenes photo of the actress in full makeup and costume! He also reveals that it took 5.5 hours of makeup to bring the character to life!
“Sumarian.. not Babylonian.. big difference,” he exclaimed in the below IG post. “Gozer make-up. What an honor it was with @oliviawilde being a absolute badass in 5.5 hrs of makeup. Thank you for your patience and amazing performance.. And thank you @pamelagoldammer @geoffredknap @mikemakesmonsters @patricksortreats @louelsey @beth_amber_hathaway @staararts for your great work and help in creating the 2nd coming of Gozer.”
In addition to Simmons and Wilde, there are two other fun cameos: Josh Gad as Muncher and A Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors actor Ira Heiden as the Mini-Pufts!
