Released back in 2017, Adam Wingard’s adaptation of the Japanese manga Death Note may not have been a huge hit with critics, but it seems it was successful enough for Netflix that a sequel is in the works. In fact, we first heard about a potential sequel way back in 2018, and a fresh update this week suggests that Death Note 2 is still on the way… at some point, at least.
Masi Oka, who produced Death Note and also starred as Detective Sasaki, explains to Screen Rant this week that development on the future sequel is very much still underway.
And the filmmaking team is aware of the 2017 movie’s issues, it seems.
Oka tells the site…
“All I can say is still in the works. Nothing has been decided either way. I can say that we are listening to the fans and hopefully the fans will be happy with the direction we’re going.”
Last we heard, Greg Russo (Mortal Kombat) is writing the script. More as we learn it.
“Death Note follows a high school student who comes across a supernatural notebook, realizing it holds within it a great power; if the owner inscribes someone’s name into it while picturing their face, he or she will die. Intoxicated with his new godlike abilities, the young man begins to kill those he deems unworthy of life.”
Nat Wolff starred in Adam Wingard’s Death Note as Light Turner, with Willem Dafoe as Ryuk. Lakeith Stanfield, Margaret Qualley, and Shea Whigham also starred in the film.
