Oslo-based indie studio Magic Pie has announced their unique take on the PvE survival genre with Polyaris. Taking cues from Hinterland Studio’s 2017 effort The Long Dark, Polyaris puts players in a post-apocalyptic frozen open world to fight for survival.
The premise is simple: nuclear winter. In the aftermath of the disaster, you must ski across icy terrains and navigate through dense forests for supplies as well as food and water. Along your journey, you’ll piece together the story of just what caused the apocalypse, uncover clues that hint at why you are the last one alive, and discover just what exactly is hidden beneath the ice.
While you may be the only human left alive, that doesn’t mean that you’re the only being around. You’ll need to fend off other predators as you search for supplies and shelter. Seeing as the name of the game is survival, you’re probably not going to be having much ammo to spare, so choose wisely when confronted with wildlife.
According to the “after 9-5” developer, the game is currently in development for release into Early Access on Steam Q4 2024. According to the Polyaris Steam page, the team has been “making great progress” with development, with the plan to stay in Early Access for “about a year to a year and a half.” The ultimate aim is to release the full version “by the end of 2025.”
