If you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of…finding a magical glowing sword to fight the denizens of the dark. At least that’s the case in Nix Umbra.
This monochrome first-person horror game by solo developer Illzard sees an unknown party lost in the deep, dark woods when they see a mysterious sword of light. They’re going to need its power too, as there’s some creepy occult goings-on out there, including flying skull demons, witches, and nightmarish spider creatures. The only objective is to survive as long as you can.
The sword needs to be charged by solar crystals to keep its light bringing powers going, and keep the doom of the dark at bay. Once the light is extinguished, it’s game over. Also out there to help are special mushrooms that change the player’s form, and magical frogs and fairies.
Beyond that, the game retains plenty of mystery, and it’s fair to say the deeper you get, the trippier things become.
Nix Umbra is out now on Steam.
