Shudder‘s upcoming limited series, “Queer for Fear: The History of Queer Horror,” is just around the corner. While you wait for September 29, we’re serving up an exclusive look at some fun promo art this afternoon. The new art, below, reimagines iconic horror figures including Alfred Hitchcock, the Bride of Frankenstein, and even Grace Jones from Vamp!
The key art features Mayhem Miller as “Reanimated Bride,” Lea DeLaria as “Hitchcock,” Saturn Risin9 as “Painted Vampire” (a nice hat tip to Grace Jones’ Vamp), and BenDeLACreme as “Wolf Teen.” Photography by Tayo Kuko. Find the full poster series below.
“Queer for Fear” is a four-part documentary series about the history of the LGBTQ+ community in the horror and thriller genres. It’s executive produced by “Hannibal” creator Bryan Fuller.
Fuller said during a recent panel, “As queer people we are considered outside of society & horror is outside of society. What it means to not be accepted by society but have a soul.”
Here’s the official synopsis from Shudder…
From its literary origins with queer authors Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker, and Oscar Wilde to the pansy craze of the 1920s that influenced Universal Monsters and Hitchcock; from the “lavender scare” alien invasion films of the mid-20th century to the AIDS obsessed bloodletting of 80s vampire films; through genre-bending horrors from a new generation of queer creators; “Queer for Fear” re-examines genre stories through a queer lens, seeing them not as violent, murderous narratives, but as tales of survival that resonate thematically with queer audiences everywhere.
The series features interviews with series consultant Renée “Nay” Bever (“Attack of the Queerwolf” Podcast co-host), Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, The Invitation), Jennifer Tilly (“Chucky”), Mark Gatiss, Kimberly Peirce (2013’s Carrie), Lea DeLaria (2000’s, The Rocky Horror Picture Show), Leslye Headland, Oz Perkins (Gretel & Hansel), and more.
