The indie devs on itch.io are always good for some quick horror gaming, and Azaxor’s Ratman is no exception. Though be prepared: judging from the comments, this one will make you work for it.
Touted as a “VHS found footage styled survival horror FPS”, Ratman draws inspiration from V/H/S/94 (specifically Chloe Okuno’s segment Storm Drain, naturally) and the F.E.A.R. series, focusing on combat and atmosphere.
The story for Ratman pretty simple: you’re a marine that’s been sent into the sewers to investigate rumors of a cryptid creature that’s been purportedly feeding on the homeless, and more recently, even snagged a military officer. If you want to make it out alive, you have to fight for your survival, or be skinned alive by the creature.
Ratman is meant to be played in a relatively short single session, but as alluded to, the difficulty will keep you busy. There’s no save system, but you respawn at the start of each level if you die. There are also underwater segments, just to make things interesting.
Right now, you can play the game absolutely for free. There’s the option to “name your own price”, if you’d like to give Azaxor some encouragement.
