Housemarque’s Returnal is getting an upgrade later this month with “Ascension”. The version 3.0 upgrade will be released on March 22, and not only adds online co-op, but a new endless mode known as Tower of Sisyphus.
As detailed on PlayStation Blog by Housemarque’s Harry Krueger, the Ascension update adds a cooperative mode for Returnal that allows players to play through the entire game with a friend online. The game plays similar to the single-player version, but if players get too far apart, they will be tethered back together. “This is to ensure that the focus remains on cooperative gameplay and both players feel connected to the fates of each other,” explains Krueger.
As for Tower of Sisyphus, this is an ascending gauntlet of increasingly dangerous phases, each containing 20 floors. Players will strive to ascend the Tower as high as possible, with each phase getting increasingly harder.
And while you’re not going for some ultra high-powered weapon, the motivation for Tower of Sisyphus is to reach the top of the leaderboard. Don’t worry, as there will be a new boss, new items and some new story content in this mode to keep you coming back.
Returnal is out now on PlayStation 5, and is also up for several BAFTA Games awards next month.
