Marvel made the huge announcement at San Diego Comic-Con tonight that Robert Downey Jr. will be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe… as iconic villain Doctor Doom!
Downey Jr. will play Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, releasing May 2026.
The Russo Brothers will be returning to the MCU to direct Avengers: Doomsday, and they’ll also be directing Avengers: Secret Wars, which is already set for release in May 2027.
“What can I tell you, I like playing complicated characters,” Downey Jr. said at SDCC tonight. His version of Doctor Doom will be replacing Kang in both upcoming Avengers movies.
Doctor Doom (aka Victor von Doom) is a classic Marvel supervillain who first appeared in The Fantastic Four #5 back in 1962. Wikipedia reminds, “In his comic book appearances, Doctor Doom is depicted as the monarch of Latveria whose goal is to bring order to humanity through world conquest. He serves as the archenemy of Reed Richards and the Fantastic Four, though he has also come into conflict with other superheroes in the Marvel Universe.”
And yes, the Fantastic Four will also appear in both upcoming Avengers movies!
