Updates on the Giger-inspired first-person adventure game Scorn have been slow since developer Ebb Software announced the game’s new release date last December. That was until YouTuber Cycu1 posted a new gameplay video for Scorn, which immediately hits home for fans of Alien.
The devs have also posted another development update to the game’s Kickstarter page, which also includes additional snippets of gameplay footage. In particular, the update focuses on the game’s weapons from concept to completion, as well as going over some underlying themes within Scorn, and explain what the role weapons will play in the game.
“Weapons often play a critical role in survival horror, but one that is drastically different from that of a shooter,” reads the post. While Scorn will have a shooter component, it is by no means a shooter. “The weapons provide more player agency, adding an extra layer through which you can engage with the world around you.”
Ebb Software’s Creative Director and CEO, Ljubomir Peklar, also delves into the process for designing the weapons, which again carry that Giger-esque biomechanical feel. “The weapons found in Scorn are mostly there as optional tools for progression. The weapons are relatively standard in terms of functionality, but this was an intentional element of their design. Adding recognizable gun types into the game, such as a pistol, shotgun, or grenade launcher, can influence how players perceive them and, ultimately, how they are used.”
As for Scorn‘s general development, the update states that the team has finalized creating all of the remaining static meshes, with the hope to have have everything completed in June. Animation and VFX are currently the biggest focus, not to mention ironing out bugs and finalizing everything. “We’re full steam ahead for our release in October and excited to be able to show off more of the game soon.”
Scorn is currently slated for release in October 2022 for PC and the Xbox Series.
