In the wake of Barbie‘s smash hit success at the box office, Mattel is going all-in on turning their toy properties into movie properties, and one of the films in the works is an adaptation of the iconic Magic 8 Ball toy. The planned Magic 8-Ball movie was originally announced back in 2019, you may recall, and we’ve got a little bit more information this week.
Chatting with Variety this week about the company’s upcoming movie slate, Robbie Brenner from Mattel Films tells the site that the Magic 8 Ball movie is very much still on the menu.
Brenner teases that the film will “probably be a PG-13 thriller.”
Developed in the 1950s and manufactured by Mattel, the novelty Magic 8 Ball is one of the most iconic toys of all time, telling fortunes and answering questions with a shake of the ball.
Last we heard, Jimmy Warden (Cocaine Bear) had come on board to work on the screenplay, while Jeff Wadlow (Truth or Dare) was announced as the director back in 2019. Blumhouse was also attached at that time, but we don’t know if that remains the case.
Stay tuned for more on the Magic 8 Ball movie as we learn it.
“Since the 1950s, Magic 8 Ball has inspired imagination, suspense and intrigue across generations. This iconic toy has a built-in connection with fans and untapped potential for storytelling,” Robbie Brenner said in a statement way back in 2019. “There are no partners better suited to tell the Magic 8 Ball story in collaboration with Mattel Films than Jeff Wadlow and Blumhouse Productions, whose unique approach to the thriller genre has captivated audiences worldwide and has gained widespread accolades.”
“As fans of Mattel and their iconic brands, we’re looking forward to bringing Magic 8 Ball, one of their most celebrated toys, to life, and playing against expectations in doing so,” said Jason Blum, founder of Blumhouse. “We look forward to partnering with Mattel Films to put this project on the fast track to the big screen and create a memorable experience for moviegoers.”
