PBS series “Monstrum“ gets into the Halloween spirit this year with a special episode that breaks down the unspoken rules of a quintessential Halloween staple: Slasher movies. And you can watch this Halloween treat right now.
“Monstrum” celebrates the world’s monsters, myths, and legends. The show, hosted by Emily Zarka, Ph.D., takes us on a journey to discover a new monster for each new episode. Dr. Zarka looks at humans unique drive to create and shape monster mythology through oral storytelling, literature and film.
In the special episode below, writer and host Dr. Emily Zarka talks about the origins, evolution and cultural impact of gory slasher films and takes a closer look at the key tropes—masked killers, final girls, and gore—that continue to make make slashers iconic. The host links the slasher’s past to its present, highlighting why slashers—from Halloween to Dead By Daylight—are here to stay.
The series that celebrates and examines monsters of all kinds is now in its sixth season, giving you plenty of backlog episodes to brush up on your folklore and monster myths. If you need an example or a place to start, Dr. Zarka traces the history of werewolves in a two-part episode that features this Bloody Disgusting writer.
Dr. Emily Zarka earned a Doctor of Philosophy in English from Arizona State University, specializing in British Romantic literature with an emphasis on the Gothic. Dr. Zarka approaches literature and film through monsters, applying the theory that human history is monster history. She is the writer and host of the PBS Digital Studios series “Monstrum“, which looks at complex histories and motivations behind some of the world’s most famous monsters. Her teaching experience includes literature, composition, film and media, and humanities classes. Currently, she is on the faculty of the English Department at Arizona State University, teaching undergraduate and graduate classes in composition and literature.
