Because sometimes nothing lifts your spirits quite like a good creature design or a monster on a rampage, this week’s streaming picks are dedicated to them.
More specifically, these titles feature horror movie monsters from the ’90s, of all shapes and varieties. Whether you’re in the mood for sobering cryptid chills or ooey-gooey creepy crawlers, bat-like vampires, or beyond, these 90s monster movies have it all.

Fire in the Sky – Epix, Hulu, Paramount+
A PG-13 movie focused on the mystery behind the missing doesn’t sound so scary, so what gives? For the most part, this film mostly plays out as a sci-fi drama about friends coping with their friend’s sudden disappearance caused by an unidentified flying object. The friends are ridiculed and suspected of murder until their missing pal reappears days later, in the nude and traumatized. When the truth finally gets revealed, it’s genuinely disturbing. While much of the runtime is light on alien action, Fire in the Sky viscerally makes up for that in the cryptid climax.
Bad Moon – AMC+, Plex, Roku, Screambox, Shudder, Tubi
After a work trip that resulted in the grisly death of his girlfriend, photojournalist Ted Harrison (Michael Paré) returns home. He attempts to reconnect with his sister Janet (Mariel Hemingway) and her son Brett. His return happens to coincide with a string of gruesome murders, and Ted’s family are oblivious to the strange changes in Ted’s behavior or that they may be in danger. Directed and adapted for the screen by Eric Red, Bad Moon isn’t your average werewolf movie. That’s because the hero is Brett’s dog, Thor. From the get-go, Thor senses Ted’s no longer human, and he intends to protect his family no matter what. It’s essentially a werewolf versus family pet story, and it works. The icing on the lycanthropic cake is the fantastic opening attack sequence.
From Dusk till Dawn – HBO Max
This vampire classic by director Robert Rodriguez and screenwriter Quentin Tarantino bides its time getting to the horror. The first act plays like a crime thriller, with the Gecko Brothers (George Clooney and Tarantino) taking a family hostage to get them across the border while running from the law. They wind up at an all-night truck stop, unaware that it’s home to a hive of vampires that use the place as their feeding ground. These aren’t your average bloodsuckers, either. This sneaky creature feature has it all; humor, action, monstrous vamps, and loads of viscera.
Ticks – Pluto TV, Roku, Tubi, Vudu
Creepy crawlers are, well, creepy all on their own. Throw in chemicals, toxic waste, or in this case, steroids, and you get pure nightmare fuel in the form of turbocharged creepy crawlers. Common blood-sucking ticks become abnormally large and aggressive thanks to getting mixed up in a drug dealer’s quest to make his marijuana plants larger with steroids. The teens enrolled in an inner-city wilderness project find themselves in the path of these massive ticks when they set up camp in their territory. The highlight of this 90s monster movie gem is the violent climax that goes full-blown creature feature. It’s goopy, gory, and totally cringe-inducing.
Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight – Shudder
Ex-solider Brayker (William Sadler) has been on the run for decades, trying to keep an ancient key from Hell’s grip. He’s forced to take refuge in an isolated hotel, which then becomes ground zero in a high-stakes battle for Earth’s domination. The fight between a ragtag crew against vicious ghouls led by the charismatic Collector (Billy Zane) is a complete blast, start to finish. Ernest Dickerson’s direction and Todd Masters’ delightful creature designs, plus an ensemble cast with no shortage of memorable performances, iconic scenes, and quotable lines of dialogue make this an all-time favorite.
