It’s kind of a wonder that we haven’t gotten more horror games based around convenience stores. There’s Puppet Combo’s Night Shift and Rewind or Die, and now we have Skaar Game Productions and Numme’s psychological thriller Envelope, a lo-fi surreal horror adventure title that is less about a killer targeting a convenience store clerk, and more about the bizarre world in which you’re immersed.
Recently released into Early Access on Steam (there’s also a demo available), Envelope was developed by “two guys in [their] mid 20’s from Norway”, and casts you as a member of the night shift crew at a convenience store. You soon find yourself getting pushed to do something beyond anything you could possibly imagine.
While the first part of the game is linear, you have the absolute freedom later on to tackle your mission any way you see fit. That also includes meeting the world’s strange cast of characters, with every choice you make leading to one of the multiple endings for Envelope.
The devs plan on keeping the game in Early Access to iron out bugs, as well as adding additional quests, extra items, as well as some general polishing. The good news is that the current version of Envelope has all the main elements of the full version, so that Early Access stay won’t be long.
