After almost four years in Early Access on Steam, FakeFish and Undertow Games’ underwater Survival Horror sub game Barotrauma is finally exiting Early Access next month. And along with the March 13th release date comes tons of shiny new features, including overhauls to the game’s campaign and factions.
For those who haven’t heard of Barotrauma before, the game is a sci-fi submarine sim that’s inspired by inspired by titles such as FTL: Faster Than Light, but with the added Survival Horror elements. In the not too distant future, humanity has fled to Jupiter’s moon. Due to the hostile surface of the moon, life can only be found in the ocean below. You’ll take command of one of a submarine and its crew, upgrading it as you go while exploring the depths and dealing with the various monsters that lurk in the deep that will look to invade your sub.
Since the game’s launch in 2019, Undertow Games has been working to overhaul the campaign and tutorials, adding new monsters, missions and outposts, improving the graphics and environments, implementing a scripted event system and much more. Barotrauma features a singleplayer campaign, as well as a multiplayer co-op mode for up to 16 players. And just because you work together doesn’t mean your friends (or you) can betray the others via assassination and sabotage missions.
And if you’re looking for additional underwater horror games, you can’t go wrong with David Szymanski’s Iron Lung.
