We’ve said before that World War I is untapped territory for horror games, which upcoming titles like Conscript and Ad Infinitum are looking to fill. You can also add developer Steelkrill Studio’s Trenches to the mix, which is heading to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Microsoft Xbox One, Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch on January 20th.
Currently in Early Access on Steam, Trenches puts you in the boots of a soldier known only as James R. You’re caught behind enemy lines, and as you might expect, you’ll have to find and fight your way out with your sanity. The only way to escape is by finding clues and objectives scattered around the maze-like map. These objectives will be randomized each playthrough, so no two sessions are the same. If that’s not enough, you’ve got someone or something following you around in the trenches.
To help in navigating, the player can use a “trench whistle” that when used, players will hear a crying sound that they’ll need to follow to find the next clue. However, whatever is following you can also hear the trench whistle, and will waste no time in coming after you. And since you’re behind enemy lines, you’ll also have to deal with them. Enemy soldiers will be able to hear if you walk on the planks lining the trenches, any bottles you break, and even you breathing into your mic.
Luckily, you’ll have several tools to aid you, including wire cutters, a gun, map, and so on. You’ll have to find them first, however. You can also employ some stealth mechanics by hiding in the narrow passageways and under beds.
