Ten Noteworthy Genre Movies to Stream at Home in April 2023

April is Halfway-to-Halloween, and this month embraces horror offerings accordingly. While The Pope’s Exorcist, Beau is Afraid, Renfield, and Evil Dead Rise ensure a robust theatrical slate for horror in April, the TV premieres get even more extensive. Of course, it doesn’t stop there. The new releases coming to streaming this month keep the Halloween spirit alive and well.

Chupa – Netflix (April 7)

The vampiric Chupacabra gets re-envisioned in Netflix’s fantasy film Chupa. The Nun’s Demián Bichir stars in this family adventure that sees a teen boy discover an adorable Chupacabra cub. Christian Slater (Heathers, Interview with the Vampire) also stars. Chupa is directed by Jonás Cuarón (Desierto), son of acclaimed filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón.

Holy Spider – Netflix (April 7)

This festival favorite arrives on Netflix this week for true crime fans. The serial killer thriller follows “a journalist who descends into the dark underbelly of the Iranian holy city of Mashhad as she investigates the serial killings of sex workers by the so-called ‘Spider Killer,’ who believes he is cleansing the streets of sinners.” Holy Spider hails from director Ali Abassi (Border, “The Last of Us,” Shelley).

Cube – SCREAMBOX (April 11)

The Japanese remake of Vincenzo Natali‘s sci-fi cult classic Cube, directed by Yasuhiko Shimizu (“Pension: Love Is Pink”), finally comes ashore this month. The newest Cube takes a deeper, darker, and deadlier look at isolation and gore and follows a group of strangers trapped in a sadistic maze without remembering how they got there. After waking up drugged and disoriented, the prisoners, who seemingly have nothing in common, find themselves in a mysterious room inscribed with an unfamiliar code.

Kids vs. Aliens – Shudder (April 14)

In Kids vs. Aliens, produced by Bloody Disgusting, Cinepocalypse, and Studio71, Gary (Dominic Mariche) wants to make wrestling home movies with his best buds. Gary’s annoyed that his older sister Samantha (Phoebe Rex) wants to skip their wrestling fun to hang with the cool kids. When the siblings’ parents head out of town on Halloween weekend, a teen house party turns to terror when aliens attack, forcing the siblings to band together to survive the night. Prepare to cheer, “F*ck space!”

Phenomena – Netflix (April 14)

The Spanish horror movie was co-written by Fernando Navarro (Verónica, Venus). In the film, “Sagrario (Belén Rueda), Paz (Gracia Olayo), Gloria (Toni Acosta), and Father Girón (Emilio Gutiérrez Cava) form an investigation team that specializes in paranormal phenomena: the Hepta group. Although the group is not going through its best moment, they agree to investigate an antique shop where strange things are happening. But what seemed like a case like any other will become the most difficult of their lives. And only together will they be able to solve it.”

She Will – Hulu (April 14)

Veronica Ghent (Alice Krige) is a famous actress seeking a tranquil recovery after a double mastectomy. She travels to a retreat in the Highlands, accompanied by young nurse Desi (Kota Eberhardt). Her trip coincides with the impending knighthood of Eric Hathbourne (Malcolm McDowell), the director that earned acclaim for the first film that launched Veronica’s career. Veronica forms a unique connection to the land, especially while asleep. Through Veronica’s dreams, locked away memories resurface and awaken something within. She Will offers an intoxicating visual feast, casting a beguiling spell of a slow awakening and reckoning in this witchy tale.

The Offering – Hulu (April 14)

After a theatrical and VOD release earlier this year, this Jewish horror feature heads to Hulu this month. It begins with an autopsy. In the film, “In the wake of a young Jewish girl’s disappearance, the son of a Hasidic funeral director returns home with his pregnant wife in hopes of reconciling with his father. Little do they know that directly beneath them in the family morgue, an ancient evil with sinister plans for the unborn child lurks inside a mysterious corpse.”

Look for paranoia and mistrust to complicate matters in this SCREAMBOX Original. “As murderous creatures ravage the outside, a group of neighbors takes refuge in an isolated house. Dianna Agron (Shiva Baby, I Am Number Four) stars in this psychological thriller that sees a woman attempting to fix her broken biological clock after friends, family, and society pressures her to have children. The trailer teases that her journey will be rife with spiders, paranoia, and psychological terror. Clock was written and directed by Alexis Jacknow, who previously helmed short films “Clock” and “Costume Change” for the first season of 20th Digital Studio’s “Bite Size Halloween.”

What would you pay to bring back the person you love? A mother gets a chance to discover the truth about her missing son and set things right in this Shudder Original from director Thomas Marchese. Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect franchise, True Blood) stars alongside Jennifer Lafleur (Big Little Lies), John Ales (Euphoria), Travis Hammer (Godless), and Richie Montgomery (Ozark).
