One of my personal favorite childhood toy lines, Monster in My Pocket helped birth a generation of monster kids, and Deadline reports that a live action adaptation is on the way!
“Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook Studios and Altar Rock Pictures have teamed up to develop a live-action series adaptation,” Deadline reports this morning.
The report continues, “The companies are meeting with writers to turn the collection of over 200 pocket-sized, collectible monsters, drawn from global myths and legend, into a series.”
Terence Carter and David Boorstein will executive produce the project on behalf of Westbrook Studios, alongside Barbara Goldner and Josh Feldman for Altar Rock Pictures, and Joe Morrison and Maggie Morrison for Morrison Entertainment Group (MEG).
Westbrook’s David Boorstein said, “We’ve seen a real thirst for projects rooted in nostalgia. Monster in My Pocket had such a major impact on our culture, and we’re excited to dive into the rich, captivating legends of these beloved characters, bringing new life to such an iconic brand alongside our partners at Altar Rock Pictures and MEG.”
Altar Rock Pictures Josh Feldman added, “Monster in My Pocket was my childhood obsession. It’s truly one of the last great independent toy brands. The Goldners and I are eternally grateful to Joe and the MEG team for entrusting us to shepherd one of their best brands.”
Developed by the Morrison Entertainment Group, the Monster in My Pocket toy line was released by Mattel in the 1990s, spawning a board game, trading cards, comic books, a video game, and an animated special. But this will be the first live action adaptation of the toy line, which featured small-sized monster toys that were as collectible as they were colorful.
