It’s no secret that the current world economic climate is fraught right now. Developers aren’t immune to the bite of inflation and a potential recession, and The Dark Pictures Anthology developer Supermassive Games appears to be the latest example.
The developer took to X this morning to announce that despite their best efforts, the company is “entering into a period of consultation,” where they will lay off members of the team.
Bloomberg reports that Supermassive will lay off roughly 90 of its 300 staff, or about 30 percent of its work force. Members of the development team were made aware of this decision this morning.
“It’s no secret that the games industry is currently facing significant challenges, and unfortunately we aren’t immune to this,” reads the statement. “After much deliberation and with deep regret, we are therefore undertaking a reorganization of Supermassive Games. This is not a decision that’s been taken lightly, with many efforts made to avoid this outcome.”
“We are all too aware of how unsettling and difficult this process is going to be for all our employees and will be working closely with all those involved to ensure the process is conducted as respectfully and compassionately as possible. We’re committed to focusing our efforts on our core strengths and upcoming titles to ensure the continued sustainability of the company.”
Currently, Supermassive is developing Little Nightmares III, as well as collaborating with Behaviour Interactive on The Casting of Frank Stone, which is slated to arrive later this year for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and on PC via Steam, and the Epic Games Store.
Their horror game Until Dawn is also getting a movie adaptation.
