Guillermo del Toro is a fan and soon you will be too. Just wait until you see the art of Chet Zar, a former creature designer/makeup effects artist that worked on everything from The Blob to Darkman, Hellboy, and even TOOL’s music videos. Since, he’s become a fine artist in the genre of Dark Art.
Bloody is excited to share his massive new hardcover art book, “Dy5topia: A Field Guide to the Dark Universe of Chet Zar”, which is a field guide that explains and categorizes the characters and mythology of the dystopian alternate dimension Chet Zar has been painting over the last 20 years.
Introduction excerpt by Mike Correll:
“When we embarked upon this journey to understand Dy5topia, we knew very little. What we did know existed in the paintings themselves. The paintings are the only ‘evidence’ that we can base our investigation and research on. So we approached the process as interviewer (me) and interviewee (Chet Zar), and observed the paintings simultaneously as the Q&A unfolded. The guidelines were simple:
- Answer, to the best of your abilities, the basic who, what, where, when, why, and how of each painting.
- Categorize the information as “for sure” or “maybe”.
- Organize the “for sure” information.
- Present the “for sure” information clearly and honestly.
- We were not seeking to create an amazing world called Dy5topia. We were seeking to discover it, and what we found surprised us!”
All artwork and concepts by Chet Zar while the text was written by “I Like to Paint Monsters” director Mike Correll.
Book design and layout created by Mackie Osborne (TOOL, The Melvins) with a foreword by artist Wayne Barlowe (Hellboy 1&2, Pacific Rim, Avatar)!
