HBO’s “The Last of Us” just keeps getting better with each passing week, and the viewership also continues to rise. The first episode debuted to 4.7 million day-one viewers, while the second episode rocketed up to 5.7 million day-one viewers. Episode Three hit 6.4 million day-one viewers, and the numbers for this past Sunday night’s Episode Four are even better.
HBO has announced, “Episode 4 delivered another series high Sunday night, with 7.5 million viewers across HBO Max and linear telecasts. Viewership was up 17% from Episode 3 and 60% above the series debut night in January. Viewing is based on Nielsen and first party data. The series has grown its audience each Sunday night with the release of new episodes.”
This number represents the Sunday night total between HBO and HBO Max, and Sunday night viewership only represents 20%-40% of a show’s total gross audience per episode.
“The Last of Us” Episode Four put the bond between Joel and Ellie front and center, with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey driving home the fact that they were both pitch perfectly cast in the beloved video game roles. And audiences are clearly in love with the duo, as more and more viewers are tuning in to watch their weekly adventures through the apocalpyse.
The curse of video game adaptations? It seems nonexistent at this point, doesn’t it?
Episode five will debut early on HBO Max and HBO On Demand beginning Friday, February 10 at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT in advance of its HBO linear premiere on Sunday, February 12 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. New episodes will continue to air Sundays at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max, leading up to the season finale on March 12.
HBO’s “The Last of Us” takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.
Pedro Pascal (“The Mandalorian”) is starring in the series as Joel and Bella Ramsey (“Game of Thrones”) is playing Ellie. Gabriel Luna (Terminator: Dark Fate) is playing Tommy, the brother of Pascal’s Joel. Storm Reid, Anna Torv, Jeffrey Pierce, Nick Offerman, Merle Dandridge, Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett and Con O’Neil will also star in the series.
Craig Mazin (“Chernobyl”) developed the series for HBO, and worked directly alongside Neil Druckmann to write and executive produce the small screen adaptation.
