Before Tom Cruise was cast in a similar role as part of Universal’s failed “Dark Universe,” it was of course Brendan Fraser who was the lead of The Mummy franchise, starring as the heroic Rick O’Connell in The Mummy, The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor between 1999 and 2008. Fraser led the films to massive box office success, a level of success that the Tom Cruise-led reboot just wasn’t quite able to achieve more recently.
Now that the “Dark Universe” is no more, where does The Mummy go from here? And would Brendan Fraser be interested in coming back to play Rick O’Connell one more time?
With Fraser’s popularity on the rise thanks to a career resurgence in recent years, that’s the question Variety asked the actor this week. His response? He’s not against the idea!
“I don’t know how it would work,” Fraser tells Variety while promoting Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale. “But I’d be open to it if someone came up with the right conceit.”
Fraser continues, “It is hard to make that movie. The ingredient that we had going for our Mummy, which I didn’t see in [the Tom Cruise] film, was fun. That was what was lacking in that incarnation. It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie. The Mummy should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary.”
The Fraser-led Mummy franchise was a massive success, with the 1999 film out-grossing the 2017 film even when its numbers aren’t adjusted for inflation. Even the lowest grossing movie in Fraser’s trilogy, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, scared up a worldwide total of $403 million. With nostalgia for the trilogy on the rise, The Mummy 4 could be huge for Universal.
Never say never…
