We never did get a sequel to John Carpenter‘s 1982 masterpiece The Thing, which left us with a question we’re still pondering to this day: what happens after the events of the 1982 movie? And who is “the thing”? Is it MacReady or is it Childs? Maybe both? Maybe neither?
Of course, we did get a *prequel* to Carpenter’s The Thing back in 2011, which more or less allowed Universal to cleverly remake Carpenter’s movie without angering the fans. Mind you, that movie’s computer generated mayhem was what ended up angering fans of the Carpenter movie, but I digress. Will we ever see a continuation of Carpenter’s 1982 movie, you ask?
Well for starters, John Carpenter himself would like to see one. Speaking with THR this week, Carpenter was asked which of his classic movies he would most like to see a follow-up to…
“I would like to do a sequel to The Thing, or a continuation, something like that,” Carpenter tells the site. “But I don’t know. See? There are a lot of things in this world I don’t know.”
What’s interesting about the idea of a new Thing movie is that *something* was in the works as of two years ago. As you may recall, we had reported back in January 2020 – what a different world that was, huh? – that Universal and Blumhouse were developing a new adaptation of John W. Campbell Jr.’s Who Goes There, the original novella that served as the basis for 1951’s The Thing from Another World and Carpenter’s 80s remake. Actually, it was set to adapt Frozen Hell, the longer version of the tale that was recently unearthed.
Carpenter had teased potential involvement in that project in August 2020, but we haven’t heard a peep about it since then. Could Carpenter be teasing Frozen Hell in his chat with The Hollywood Reporter here in February 2022? It’s a question we’d answer the same way we’d answer the great MacReady/Childs debate: with little more than personal speculation.
Stay tuned for more as we learn it.
