Lionsgate has acquired worldwide theatrical distribution rights to Hurry Up Tomorrow, a psychological thriller that will mark the feature-starring debut of The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye), Deadline reports today.
No plot details as of yet, but Hurry Up Tomorrow will be an extension of The Weeknd’s upcoming sixth studio album of the same title, which will stand alongside the film’s score by The Weeknd and Daniel Lopatin.
The Grammy-winning artist stars alongside Scream actor Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan (The Batman, The Green Knight). Trey Edward Shults (Krisha, It Comes at Night) writes and directs Hurry Up Tomorrow.
Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, told Deadline, “Abel is a visionary whose art cannot be confined by any single medium,” he said. “With Hurry Up Tomorrow, in partnership with Trey, his musical universe expands onto the big screen with a psychological thriller that will usher in a new cinematic experience for fans. We are thrilled to be bringing it to audiences worldwide.”
While the psychological thriller may be The Weeknd’s feature star role, the artist is no stranger to the realm of horror. In 2022, , multi award-winning artist joined forces withUniversal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights for the first time ever to inspire all-new, terrifying haunted houses based on his record-breaking “After Hours” album. The Weeknd is renowned for his groundbreaking music that blends daring, provocative lyrics with innovative sounds and ominous undertones. The artist was also the first-ever pop star to get a Fangoria cover story in 2022.
Hurry Up Tomorrow is being produced by his Manic Phase and Reza Fahim along with the late Kevin Turen and Harrison Kreiss. The exec producers are Ortega, Shults, Michael Rapino, Ryan Kroft, Wassim “Sal” Slaiby and Harrison Huffman.
