The 1996 action-adventure blockbuster Twister is getting a sequel from Universal Pictures all these years later, and Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) is now in talks to direct the film.
Deadline reports, “Following an extensive search that had a number of top directors chasing the job, sources tell Deadline that Oscar-nominated Minari director Lee Isaac Chung is in early talks to helm Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s Twisters.”
Last we heard, the hope was to bring Helen Hunt back for the sequel, which is said to center on the daughter of the characters Hunt and the late Bill Paxton played in the original film.
Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) wrote the script for the new movie.
The original film centered on Bill and Jo Harding (Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt), advanced storm chasers on the brink of divorce who must join together to create an advanced weather alert system by putting themselves in the cross-hairs of extremely violent tornadoes.
Frank Marshall will produce the sequel to director Jan de Bont’s 1996 movie, which earned two Academy Awards nominations and made a massive $495 million at the box office.
