Produced by Sam Raimi, the supernatural horror movie Umma (Korean for “mother”) is being released by Sony on March 18, 2022, and the official trailer has arrived today.
“A mother’s love never dies” is the tagline on the Umma poster (also found below), and the trailer unleashes a tormented spirit which looks to take the form of a Kumiho, a nine-tailed fox spirit from Korean folklore. Kumiho is the Korean term for succubus, and you can see the nine-tailed fox at the 2:04 mark in the trailer. Umma is here, and she’s not alone…
Wikipedia explains, “The only role the kumiho—the nine-tailed fox—plays in Korea is the demoness. Whether she appears as maiden, wife, or succubus, the kumiho’s sole goals are power and death. She is the only kind of fox that kills with her own hands, and also the only kind of fox that eats her prey.” This creature recently appeared in “Lovecraft Country.”
Watch the Umma trailer below, and expect the film in theaters.
Umma follows Sandra Oh as Amanda, living a quiet life with her daughter (Fivel Stewart) on an American farm. But when the remains of her estranged mother arrive from Korea, Amanda becomes haunted by the fear of turning into her own mother. The cast also includes Dermot Mulroney, Odeya Rush, MeeWha Alana Lee and Tom Yi.
Iris K. Shim wrote the script and directed Umma.
Through the banner Raimi Productions, Sam Raimi and Zainab Azizi are the producers. Umma is also executive produced by André Øvredal (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark).
