Adult Swim‘s mini-series “Uzumaki,” based on the supernatural horror manga by legendary author Junji Ito, was announced way back in 2019, and has since faced many delays. Thankfully, fans won’t have to wait much longer: Adult Swim revealed the Uzumaki premiere date during San Diego Comic Con 2024.
Prepare to get dizzy over spirals when “Uzumaki” debuts September 28 on Adult Swim, followed by next day streaming on Max.
The news comes with a brand new, appropriately weird teaser for the series, below.
Written and illustrated by Ito, the original manga series told the story of the citizens of Kurōzu-cho, a fictional city that is plagued by a supernatural curse involving spirals.
The “Uzumaki” manga series is made up of three volumes that were first published in 1998. It follows the story of high school student Kirie Goshima, who lives in the cursed town of Kurôzu-cho described as a small fogbound town located on the coast of Japan. The manga received a live-action feature adaption in 2000. Most recently, Ito’s work received another anime adaptation in Netflix’s “Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre” anthology series.
Directed by Hiroshi Nagahama, the “Uzumani” series will feature music by Hereditary’s Colin Stetson.
“As a huge fan of Junji Ito, I’m thrilled to be able to tackle one of his signature works, with a team of amazing creators who are all equally devoted to doing justice to this monumental work of horror manga,” said Jason DeMarco, Adult Swim/Toonami’s creative director, when production on the adaptation was first announced.
The most recent plan was for “Uzumaki” to release its four-episode run in October 2022 on Toonami. It’s been a long, spiraling road, but this news means we’re finally on our way to “Uzumaki” madness. Stay tuned for more details as they arrive.
