Written and illustrated by Ito, the original manga series told the story of the citizens of Kurōzu-cho, a fictional city that is plagued by a supernatural curse involving spirals.
The “Uzumaki” manga series is made up of three volumes that were first published in 1998. It follows the story of high school student Kirie Goshima, who lives in the cursed town of Kurôzu-cho described as a small fogbound town located on the coast of Japan. The manga received a live-action feature adaption in 2000. Most recently, Ito’s work received another anime adaptation in Netflix’s “Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre” anthology series.
Directed by Hiroshi Nagahama, the series will feature music by Hereditary’s Colin Stetson.
“As a huge fan of Junji Ito, I’m thrilled to be able to tackle one of his signature works, with a team of amazing creators who are all equally devoted to doing justice to this monumental work of horror manga,” said Jason DeMarco, Adult Swim/Toonami’s creative director.
